The author did well to show how ?Richard was beginning to accept life again He also was going to accept love or you were hoping so. The book also had some twists and turns,. I liked it the first two books were the best but also liked the third book too.

Beautiful story with wide range of human emotions from best to lowest. Strong heroine who is wise and loving. Good second book of three.
This book was very enjoyable to read. Had A lot of plots going on.A lot of people. The story line was something that made the book so good.I would recommend this book to others to read
I'm a huge fan of historical mysteries. Candace Camp is skilled in plotting out intrigue with lots of romance. I loved all the characters except of course the villain, a wicked one to be sure.
Richard Duke of Cleybourne, returned to his country estate to deal with the tragic loss he had suffered four years earlier, the death of his wife and child. Not dealing at all with his loss his intent is to kill himself and when visitors arrive he does not even want to let them in.
Jessica Maitland is a fiery flamed-haired governess to Gabriella Carstairs. Gabriella recently inherited a substantial estate when her Great Uncle is murdered. Immediately before his death he had warned Jessica that Gabriella was in danger and that she should be taken to the Duke of Cleybourne, her guardian.
The arrival of Jessica and Gabriella just might be what Richard needs to conquer his self imposed exile of the world. When the perverted Veseys arrive determined to retrieve Gabriella, Richard feels the danger to Gabriel is very real and Richard knows he cannot turn this innocent teen over to such a depraved duo. Shortly afterward, whether it is the Veseys or some unknown assailant, there is an attempt on her life.
Although I really really liked this book I have to grade it down a bit from the other two in the series. For me there were a few too many characters and it seemed the mystery plot dictated the romance rather than the romance being the central part of the story. In a way I suppose all of this confusion and suspense is what Richard needed to get himself out of his self imposed isolated world of the last four years. So while he probably needed to be thrown into murder and mayhem for me I would have enjoyed more a development of their love story. Thus while a good read not quite a five, but a strong four star book.
I liked but didn't love the first book in this series, but I sure loved this one. It had so much in it that was catnip to me a governess as the heroine, a house party (even if unintentional), and a mystery which reminded me of Agatha Christie's. The characters were well-developed with backstories that made them very empathetic. I fell in love with both the Richard and Jessica and several of the minor characters, too.
I love regency romances! I read the first book in this series and loved it, and I loved this one, too. The premise was intriguing - governess takes young charge to new guardian, a Duke - and I was looking forward to Richard's story. The heroine, Miss Jessica Maitland, was spectacular - beautiful, smart, and strong. The hero, Richard, Duke of Cleybourne, was also wonderful - handsome, aristocratic, and just a bit tragic. They had fantastic chemistry. The storyline was very Agatha Christie-esque, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the author's writing style - plenty of action and dialogue. Overall, a great book, and I can't wait to read book three!
This is one great read with never a dull moment. The Duke starts out sunken in guilt, and grief when his wife and daughter are killed in a carriage accident but after this heroine arrives on the scene, his life of dull-doldrums are over with a drum-roll of excitement!
It's really fun to see this hero come out of his self-inflicted shell and become "human" again. I can hear his voice and Ms.Camp has him evolving , fighting every inch of the way to learning to car again for someone and to live. AND man do they live! What a funny, mysterious, household both servants, nobles, and the in-betweens! You can picture every person in this story and really care what happens to them.
The poor duke doesn't stand a chance but the words out of his mouth every time something happens and/or "visits" themselves in his home is really a delight to watch and behold!
This is a fun read that sweeps you along with the heroine. Be warned there is explicit sex but I passed over it as I'd rather not know "everything" with every couple!
This book as the others in the series are "peopled" with characters you want to know better and care what happens to them. Enjoy!
